What to know more about your ancestors?
Wurzeln is the German word for “Roots. Sturm Wurzeln is a narrative of our German forebears and their way of life. Here I will trace our ancestors in Kötzting Germany, Roselle Iowa, and Saint James Minnesota. The goal is to learn a little bit about their life experiences situated within their historical and cultural context to better appreciate our common heritage.
Here is something you may not know
Seven miles south of Roselle is Templeton population ~ 320. It is here Max’s younger brother Wolfgang bought a farm in 1925 that has been farmed for three generations by a Sturm. During prohibition Templeton became known for producing the “Good Stuff” a bootlegged rye whiskey renowned for its spicy taste with a hint of caramel. It was smuggled to Chicago by hiding barrels in train cattle cars that ran though Templeton. It was also thought to be smuggled to Saint James by our grandfather Max after visiting his Iowa relatives. It is still in production. Try it – it is good stuff. To this day there is a Sturm working in this distillery.
